Nissa Chadwick is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over 25 years of experience as a therapist and instructor for graduate-level counseling students. She has a special interest in working with clients in their inner world, in their relationships, and helping with difficulties that arise in those places. She is an Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist with extensive training and experience in attachment work. Nissa also has considerable spiritual formation expertise as a spiritual director trained at Heart of Christ Spiritual Direction Program and deeply enjoys incorporating that into her work with clients as appropriate.
At the core of Nissa’s work is the truth that human beings were each created for union with the Most Holy Trinity in this life and the next. Flowing from this union is a life of virtue and rightly ordered love of neighbor and self. Sometimes people have barriers to this union and don’t feel at peace with God, their neighbors, or themselves. So often, a person will try everything he or she can to remedy those relational ruptures or find peace. At times, one can find relief and repair, but at times, they don’t, so additional resources are needed. Sometimes there isn’t necessarily a rupture; someone just wants to grow or deepen their relationships with God, others, or themselves, but is not quite sure how to do that.
People have different parts of themselves. Many of these parts are integrated, and so a person doesn’t notice them very much. Sometimes, though, there are parts that are not so well integrated. These are parts that hold unprocessed pain, vulnerabilities, wounds, and traumas. Other unintegrated parts work hard to protect those parts or protect us from those parts and their challenging feelings. In addition to the different parts of a person, there is an inmost self, one’s spiritual center. The more integrated one’s parts are, the more the inmost self leads and guides. People run into challenges when unintegrated parts “take over” and try to manage the internal systems, navigate relationships, or even run one’s lives, and they simply are not equipped to do so. Furthermore, the burdened, unintegrated parts are the most vulnerable to the enemy who is always “prowling about seeking the ruin of souls”.
Nissa believes that the healing, flourishing, and holiness of clergy and religious will bring healing to the Church and the world. Healed and integrated priests are what the world desperately needs. They are our spiritual fathers, and when they are well, in right relationship with themselves, others, and in union with God, they can help lead others to the same. One of the greatest privileges Nissa has is to work with priests in their healing journeys; she finds it to be truly sacred ground.
Thriving marriages are also a healing force for our Church and the world. After an individual’s relationship with the Lord, it is the most important relationship in the lives of spouses. The Sacrament of Marriage contains actual grace, and so when there is conflict, disconnection, or insecurity in marriage, the flow of grace may be impeded or inhibited. There is much value for a couple and all of those that they touch with their marriage to build secure attachments where they have been disrupted or never existed in the first place.
Nissa also works with women who want to work individually. Women are also a profound source of healing for the world. Sometimes women want to work on relationship issues, friendship issues, feelings of loneliness, or difficulties related to a sense of being overwhelmed with the noisiness, busyness, and demands of modern life. Oftentimes women desire a quiet place to talk about their lives, themselves, and how they can grow closer to our Lord, how they can deepen their prayer life, and how they can have the peace that Jesus promises us in John 14:27 (RSVCE) when he says, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”
So whether you are a member of the clergy, religious, lay woman, or couple and desire to work on your relationship with God, others, or yourself, reach out to Nissa today.
