About

Dr. Mascola is warm, supportive, and collaborative. He has a gentle sense of humor and kindness that can be especially comforting when one is feeling vulnerable and lost. He is hard-working and a highly trained specialist in Psychiatry who completed his internship, residency, and fellowship at Stanford University in the Division of Behavioral Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, where he earned multiple honors for his dedicated service. He was part of a highly select faculty and was the Director of Evidence-Based Practices and Ongoing Education at Stanford, where he organized the training program for the faculty and conducted clinical research, taught, and saw his patients. He has more than two decades of experience in consultation in higher education at Stanford University and the University of California. He now serves his patients exclusively in his private practice and through MyCatholicDoctor.

Dr. Mascola is a devout Catholic and a member of the Italian Catholic Federation and the Knights of Columbus. He enjoys the application and strengthening of the virtues and faith in his work for those who are especially seeking this. He is a member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary and has experience also with Mountain Search and Rescue, and believes in service and fraternity. Dr. Mascola’s family is from Italy on both sides, where faith and family are still treasured. His family in Italy was humbled by poverty and immigrated, and they were proud to become Americans. They worked as commercial fishermen and entrepreneurs who valued hard work, honesty, and integrity. Their deep Catholic faith, family, and work ethic are what got them through those tough times. Dr. Mascola and his wife, Jennifer raised two beautiful children who are thriving today. He knows the pain and loss experienced in the passing of his infant daughter and then his dear wife Jennifer to cancer at a very young age. He can relate from personal experience the piercing pain that we experience in loss and adversity. He shares this experience with those he consults with as a “Fisher of Men.”

Dr. Mascola performs comprehensive mental health evaluations and is an expert in providing an extensively researched form of counseling called “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy” or “CBT” for conditions like Major Depression, Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Panic disorder, Phobia, and other conditions. As a physician, Dr. Mascola can consult regarding and utilize medications, where indicated, if Cognitive Behavior Therapy is not adequately helping, and his patients wish to consider this in combination. He is sensitive to the concerns of his patients and conservative with medications, and aims to use as little as possible for as short a duration as possible, and is comfortable in managing most patients’ conditions without medications wherever indicated. He can assist persons who are on medications to consider methods of successively tapering off of them and minimizing risk for relapse where this is indicated. He especially enjoys collaborating with persons of faith who wish to incorporate their faith in their treatment. Life can often bring severe challenges that cause us to struggle to find hope. Please reach out for a consultation, as you would be surprised at the warmth and comfort that often comes when two or more are gathered together in His name.
